Don’t miss ...
- Muscat, the old port quarter, is the place of the main Sultan’s palace and walking there is a fascinating experience.
- Mutra, some 3 km north-west from Muscat, represents the main port zone, both commercial and residential.
- Ruwi, the contemporary commercial sector of the capital. The three forts of Muscat stem, in their nowadays form, from the 1580ies, when the city was occupied by the Portuguese.
- The fort of Mutra dominates a hill, whereas the ones of Jalali and Mirani guard the entry into the capital. These forts are used by the police and the army, so they are closed for the public.
- The Oman Museum in the Madinat Sultan Qaboos, west of Muscat, presents a wide panorama of the 5,000 years of the sultanate, the expositions on Islam, shipbuilding and architecture of the forts. In Ruwi, the National Museum offers an amazing collection of silver objects. The Sultan's Armed Forces Museum in the Bait Al Falaj fort provides an excellent account on the history of Oman.
